There are different views on what the Steps in the Critical process are and these are three of them.
The first is Stephenson Smiths five steps. Stephenson Smith was a ethnologist and surveyor who founded the "Polynesian Society" His five steps include, apprehension of the work by senses. Analysis of the work to put it in perspective. Interpretation of the work. Orientation of the work to its place in the history of similar works. And last, valuation or the determination of the peculiar or general essence of the work.
The second view is Jodi Cohen's three steps that critical thinker goes through. The first step that go through is by analyzing the communication context. Next they must interpret the audience making medium and last they make a judgement about that meaning.
The third views is the Laswell Model of Communication. This model contains four steps to the critical process. The first is the originator criticism. This assesses a group that is gathered into corporate structures like a marketing division, stations, news departments and networks. The second thing is the message criticism which means that the media messages are subject to external definition with a broad range of potential meanings. The next is media criticism which assesses the way that they media deals with criticism and the fourth is receiver criticism. Receiver criticism analyzes the uses and gratification's that consumers seek in a given program.
