Four Theories of the Press: Social Responsibility Theory

Social responsibility is the theory that is most strongly seen in America. This theory says that libertarianism is to be limited by social responsibility. It is a free enterprise system. The social responsibility theory provides for private ownership of mass media in exchange for responsible use of media. This theory is tied to a form of government that is based on a constitution and a bill of rights. We have a free marketplace of ideas that coincides with capitalism and the free enterprise system. The social responsibility theory allows free press without any censorship. It is a halfway point between the authoritarian and libertarian theory. The theory allows everyone to express their opinion about the media. It is a community opinion and the media must remain socially responsible. This theory strives to be completely accurate and truthful in their information. This is the theory of modern day. There is an equal radio and television time for all political candidates.
